    Class 5 Genre Reading Challenge

    Class 5 Genre Reading Challenge

The Kamaroi Genre Reading Challenge for 2021 is well under way!  Each year, children in the senior classes are asked to expand their reading universe by exploring books from genres they love, along with genres they wouldn’t normally be drawn to.

This year, the theme for our Genre Challenge is “Out of this World”.

Class 5 students are aiming to visit five “Genre” Planets, whilst Class 6 students are visiting at least six genres. In Week 7 we had a focus on the “Fantasy” genre. Class 5 had a lively class discussion about what types of books would fall into this genre, including those that have themes of magic, mythical creatures and fantastical worlds.

In Week 8, the Library Lesson was dedicated to “Realistic Fiction”-stories that “could really happen”. Do other genres overlap with Realistic Fiction? Of course!

Historical fiction and even some Sci-Fi or Dystopian stories can also be very realistic.

We have already seen dedicated Fantasy or Realistic fiction fans, dipping their toes into the water and finding that there are other books out there!

It’s all about discovering and enjoying new books.

    Happy reading!

    Bernie Banbury and Lisa Smith

    News from the PA

    News from the PA

Thanks to all who 'zoomed in' for our PA meeting this week.  It's great to see the enthusiasm for re-connecting our community! We're excited to welcome Suzy Gilbert as our new Craft Group Coordinator and a big thanks to those parents who've signed up to assist with the Wednesday Market Stall.  Please read on to hear about PA initiatives:

    • Craft Group - great Wednesday Workshops coming up- all welcome!

    • Stewart House clothing donation

    • Market Stall - sign up for a shift or come along and stock up on gorgeous Steiner inspired books, crafts and gifts

    • Kamaroi clothing for sale - it's getting chilly and it’s always a few degrees cooler at Kamaroi - so rug your kids up in some warm Kamaroi Winter Clothing.

    • Fair boutique - gather up your unwanted clothing over the long weekend – the first 2nd-hand clothing drop-off for the boutique is coming up!

Kamaroi Clothing Donation to Stewart House

    About Stewart House:

Each year 1,700 school children in need go to Stewart House (in Curl Curl) from many parts of NSW and the ACT. During their stay, children are provided with optometric, dental and medical treatment as well as emotional support. This is balanced with health and educational programs and out of school activities to boost their self-esteem and to promote a healthier lifestyle. The children are also provided with basic needs such as toothbrushes, shoes and clothing.

Why are we donating Kamaroi clothing:?

We have an excess of new size 12 Kamaroi clothing. This size is rarely requested/purchased by Kamaroi children, and we’d like it to go to children in need.  The Stewart House staff have said it will be gratefully received.

    How can you support this?

Your family can donate one or more pieces of clothing as part of this appeal.  The money will go the Parent Association to recoup some of the original cost of the clothing and to fund ongoing programs at the school such as Parent Education and music ensembles.  Around 150 items of clothing will go to Stewart House for distribution to children who attend their programs.

When: Wednesday Market & Winter Festival, from 8:45am

    Where: Piazza

    Suggested donation: T-shirt - $10, Long sleeve - $15,  Jumper - $20

The Parent Association Market Stall needs your help!

What is the PA Market Stall?

Every Wednesday of term we open a market stall in the piazza selling crystals, books, hand-made toys, gifts, crayons, beeswax, Kamaroi clothing etc. It runs from 8:30am to 9:30am.

What do we do with the proceeds?

The profits from the stall go towards funding projects and programs at Kamaroi such as Parent Ed, playground equipment, music ensembles.

    How can you help?

We need volunteers to help run the Wednesday stall. Ideally you will be able to commit to at least two Wednesday mornings a term.

    How long does it take?

To set up, run and pack up the stall takes approximately an hour – from 8:30am – 9:30am.

    Why would I sign up?

    •       Great chance to meet the children and other parents!

    •       Help support the school with fundraising and community connection

    •       The PA buys you a hot drink from the Kitchen to start your day 😊

    How can I sign up?

    •       It’s easy to sign up via Sign up Zone: https://signup.zone/joKiikGjsPoSjtXSk

    •       We prefer people to commit to at least 2 Wednesdays per term as it’s easier to manage training/ stock/ communication.

    •       Please add your dates in your calendar!

How would I learn how to set up?

We can organise a time with Cris or Katie at a time that works for you.  We can also train you on your first shift (it’s not hard!)

How can I find out more information?

If you’re not ready to sign up but want more information, drop by the Market Stall on Wednesday or send a message to Cris (0410 140 990).

18 weeks until our Kamaroi Fair - Sunday 17th October!

    BOUTIQUE (2nd hand clothing)

If you’re feeling inspired over this long weekend to do a bit of a clean-out, our first collection will be in the last week of this term. Why not sort through your wardrobes for those clothes that don’t work for you anymore or that your kids have outgrown?

Please drop bags of clothes on Wednesday 23rd or Thursday 24th June (only) on the barn verandah. We will have more collection dates next term.

We welcome women’s, men’s, boys’, girls’ and unisex clothing and handbags.

    Please remember:

    * All items need to be clean and of good, saleable quality

    * NO underwear or socks

    * Shoes - new or in near-new condition

    * Items for babies to 2 years -  new or near-new condition

Please write your name and mobile number on the bag and leave outside the barn doors, on the verandah.

    Thanks!

Tiffany, Melinda and Liz from Class 4

    Stay warm!

All the festivals we have at Kamaroi are an extremely important part of the Steiner curriculum; they build the culture and community in a way that nourishes and strengthens each child and in turn the whole community.

The teachers and children put an enormous effort into preparing for any festival. This work starts early and culminates in the festival itself during the school day. The Winter Festival creates a mood; a sense of wonder and awe that is remembered by the children all their lives.

We can’t stress enough how important it is that every child is present for the festival. If they miss out they really feel it, as their whole class live into the festival together, no matter what class they are in.

    Mid Winter Festival Classes K - 4

The spiral walk for Kindergarten and Classes 1-4 is so simple yet can be a profound experience.

For children, sitting calmly and patiently, absorbing the quiet stillness of the room, observing and then participating in the walking of the spiral to find the light is very significant.  That walk symbolises our turning inward during the dark of winter, whilst also holding that light of love within.  It is this light which carries us forward as individuals and as human beings who are part of something much bigger.  That light has huge potential for us and humanity in general if we can take the time and effort to access it.

    Please register your attendance here:

    https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/kamaroi-mid-winter-festival-k-4-tickets-156439044393

Due to the event being held indoors there is a limit of 2 adults per child to ensure we maintain a safe physical distance.

    Event Timings:

    9am - Kindergarten 9am
    • After the festival, class parents may gather used apples and hand out to parents once back in kindy.
    11:30am - class 1 & 3
    • Prior to starting, class parents should check spiral and tidy up as necessary before their own group starts.
    • After the festival, class parents may gather used apples and hand them to the teacher. The teacher may give the apples to the children at the end of the day.
    1:30pm Class 2 & 4
    • Prior to starting, class parents should check spiral and tidy up as necessary before their own group starts.
    • After the festival, class parents may gather used apples and hand them to the teacher. The teacher may give the apples to the children at the end of the day.
    Class 4

    •  Class 4 dismantles the spiral after they have walked it. This can be done when it is convenient, either straight after the festival or in the late afternoon.

    •  Muslin is washed and stored, ivy and flowers taken or thrown. Everything including muslin is given back to Kindy to be stored.

    NOTE:

Parents/Carers are to notify teachers if they are taking their child. A roll will be issued to teachers on a clip-board to record when a child is taken by the family. Class 4 Parents may not take their child until the spiral has been dismantled and items stored away.

Just a few points to help ensure the experience is as comfortable as possible for all:

    • Please do not send your child to school on the festival day if he/she is very unwell.

    • Please make alternative arrangements for younger siblings.

    • Be aware that if you do have a toddler who (understandably) is not coping with proceedings you may have to leave via the back door of the hall.

For the children’s safety while carrying the lit candle:

    • Ensure that children are dressed appropriately – no dresses or flowing tops.

    • All children need to wear close fitting clothing

    • Everyone’s hair needs to be tied back.

    VERY IMPORTANT...

To help create and maintain a mood of reverence and respect for the festival and the children participating… Please be on time as late comers will not be able to enter the hall once the festival begins and we don’t want anyone to miss out.

Please no photographs or filming during the spiral walk. There will be an opportunity to take photos once the children leave Nanga mai Hall.

Families are reminded to please register to attend!

    Mid Winter Festival - Class 5 & 6

For Class 5 and 6 children (and their parents!) this is certainly worth waiting for. It is a bit of a ‘rites of passage’ in itself to progress from the spiral to the challenge of the labyrinth.

Please try not to bring younger siblings to the Class 5 and 6 Festival. Also dress very warmly for the evening. There will be ‘patient sitting’ whilst children wait to walk the labyrinth so lots of layers are recommended.

A little about the significance of the labyrinth:

A labyrinth is an ancient, mystical symbol that relates to wholeness. It combines the imagery of the circle and the spiral into a meandering but purposeful path. Labyrinths have long been used for meditation and prayer tools.

Labyrinths and mazes have often been confused. A labyrinth is not a maze. A maze is like a puzzle to be solved. It has twists, turns and blind alleys.

A labyrinth has only one path. It is unicursal. The way in is the way out. The path leads you on a circuitous path to the centre and out again. With a maze many choices must be made and an active mind is needed to solve the problem of finding the centre. With a labyrinth there is only one choice to be made – whether or not to walk a purposeful/spiritual path.

To walk a sacred path is to discover our inner sacred space. The labyrinth is a tool to guide healing, deepen self-knowledge and empower creativity. It helps people to see their lives in the context of a path – we are all on our life path and your life is a sacred journey and it is about change, growth, discovery, movement, transformation and listening to your intuition and taking courageous challenges along the way.

From the entrance to the centre of the labyrinth is the path of shedding or ‘letting go’. There is a release and an emptying of worries and concerns. At the centre there is illumination, insight, clarity and focus. It is here that you are in a receptive, meditative state.

Labyrinths are becoming a more popular form of meditative practice in the general community.

    Mid Year Reports

    Mid Year Reports

All Mid-Year reports have now been posted and should arrive soon!

    From The Library

    From The Library

My main sentiment in this edition of the Bush Telegraph is gratitude and thanks!

What a joy it is to have opportunities for our community to come together again. Seeing our parents and carers participating in craft and visiting the Wednesday market stall is wonderful.  Thank you parents for being so welcoming of new families as well!  We have a number of events coming up that will provide forums to bring you together. I am so glad this is happening.

I made mention at the PA meeting this week that enrolments are looking very positive for 2022. Additionally, in Term 3 this year, we have a number of children starting at various times.  We have two little ones joining our Prep group, another in Kindergarten, and other children coming into Classes 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. A couple of these Class placements are still to be confirmed.  I know the children will be excited to welcome new friends and classmates.

An overwhelming factor that people become interested in our wonderful school is through word of mouth recommendations.  Thank you for sharing your experiences and for promoting our school!

Our tours have been well attended recently and I must give thanks to the Class 6 children who have assisted at these tours.  Meeting our Class 6 children and seeing how they interact and communicate, has strongly influenced parents’ decisions to pursue enrolment at Kamaroi. I think the children themselves are an important selling point for our school. They are a credit to the school but also a credit to their families.

    Thank you!

There comes a time for our parents when they need to consider the future destination Secondary School.  This week we held the Graduate Panel event to provide the opportunity for parents to learn from our ex-students about their transition to Secondary School.  The panel shared their personal experiences and memories of Kamaroi, speaking about their learning, what they are doing now, and the most important take-outs of their Steiner experience. The quote that

“Steiner education sets students up for a life of contribution and achievement, fulfilment and success, and gives them the confidence and capability to forge their own paths as free, morally responsible and resilient people” (SEA)….rang true.

The feedback I have received from people who attended on Wednesday evening has been extremely positive and we will certainly make this an annual event.  The parents of the Graduate Panel members shared their pride in their children and remarked on their ability to express views; prospective parents were very impressed by the calibre of our graduates; and current families and their children were affirmed that the transition to Secondary School is not so overwhelming.  Steiner graduates from Kamaroi are well equipped for the next phase of their learning journey!

    Staff Update

We’re delighted that Belinda Schaefer is resuming her role in Kindergarten (KR) following her leave in Semester One.  She will be working 3 days per week from the start of Term 3. We are also very happy that Rose will continue working on the same Kindergarten class with Belinda 2 days each week.  We will adjust the name of this class to KBR. Jutta will continue working for us on the 1 day per week with Lisa in KO.  The assistants, Margaret and Justine, will continue on their current days and classes.

    Monday: Lisa / Belinda

    Tuesday: Lisa /Belinda

    Wednesday: Lisa / Belinda

    Thursday: Lisa / Rose

    Friday: Jutta / Rose

Another update is that Lisa Olsvold has requested Leave in 2022 to refresh and re-energise.  I am certainly supporting her request.  Kindergarten is a time of preparation for children’s future learning in school and it requires competent adult role models as well as loving and secure relationships.  There is a lot of giving by the adults who carefully nurture the children. So many of our children at Kamaroi have had the privilege of being guided by Lisa over many years and it is now time to respect that Lisa needs to take some time for herself.  We will be advertising for a Temporary Early Childhood Steiner Teacher position for 2022.

The current arrangement for Class 2 with Julie and Michelle will continue into Term 3.  We are so lucky to have Michelle working one day a week in Class 2 to give Julie a little time-out, as she continues to heal and return to full health.  As with any shared teaching arrangement we ensure there is good communication between our teachers so that the children’s ongoing needs and learning is monitored and supported. This is working very well in a number of our classes at Kamaroi.

Wishing everyone a wonderful long weekend!

    Warm wishes,

    Barbara Maxfield

    Principal
